The conventional wisdom is that good friendships enhance an individual's sense of happiness and overall well-being.

A prrfect summer day and a prrfect summer cat, taken early August.
A summer day.

A summer day.

A summer day.

Nicoline has been my friend and ally for over 14 years now, she was always there for me even when my ME/CFS had me bed-bound she always wanted to hang out with me.
Now she's getting old. And for the first time in her long life her health is stating to get to what one would expect for an old cat. It makes me so indescribably sad, she might only have a year left at best..
Losing dear friends and pets sure isn't easy, especially when you take the grief beforehand, I tend to do that. Nicoline is still purringly alive, if not kicking a bit less than she usually does. But the thought of never seeing her again is just making me so sad thees days..

Have you lost a pet that was dear to you? And how can one best cope with such a loss?

  2. Oh dear, that is such a sad thing! I remember when my big labrador almost died, I just sobbed. But he's better now.

I haven't ever lost a dear pet yet, but I think you're already doing a wonderful job. You are already spending time with Nicoline and giving her the best of care. I think that counts a lot :)

  3. I understand what you feel ... Cats are such presences, like real little people. Enjoy his presence!

  4. I've lost too many, too close, too soon. I don't know how to cope with such things, it's heart-breaking.

I tend to do that too: taking grief beforehand. It's such a stupid thing to do, really. One should enjoy moments, details, while they are real - and not just memories.

  6. Oh it's so hard isn't it!?!
My best friend as a child was my kitty. I had Smokey from the age of 2 till I was 15. Things just aren't the same without them :S But I learned to love another kitty. And I'm sure you will too.
L has had his cat for 15 years now, and she's 19 years old. So we are waiting too I guess. She is mostly healthy, just a few nasty hairball troubles :S But it will be very hard for him too. Dustie was from a rescue shelter, and she was very abused and scared when he got her. He just thinks about how he gave her a happy 15 years. And hopes that it made up for, and erased all the pain of her first four years.
Just think of the warm, cozy, well loved life she shares with you. I'm sure she couldn't wish for a better mommy. And I bet theres a wee one out there somewhere that will steal your heart sooner rather than later :) And you will love anew.
    xo
...now I read what I wrote and I hope it doesn't just make you more sad!

  7. Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. I know how hard it is; my mom and I had our cat Brandy for over 20 years before she died of just old age. In May my cute little bird died all of a sudden; I think she was just old, I had her for over 7 years, and I don't know how old she was when i got her. It took a little while to get out my usually habits that I had with her. And, I miss her flying over to me when i'd lay down to read. She always had to sit in front of my book.
It is hard, and sad, to see a pet get old. It does take a little time to get used to not having them there; but I just keep remembering what a great pet and addition to the family they were.
Take care, we're all here for you.

  8. You'll never be completely ready to lose a pet. The best thing you can do is just spend time with them, always let them know you love them.

My dog was put down while i was away from home, but i would always give her hugs and attention when she was around. Knowing this really helped ease the pain.

  12. Barbro: Så trist, kondolerer.
Det er vanskelig å ikke bli lei seg, man må vel nesten bare akseptere at man er det, men fortsatt klare å nyte tiden man har igjen sammen :)

  14. summertime dreams: I think I will. It's hard when they're suddenly not there anymore, but that's when you just have to remember the good times.

Oh my, that's even older than my little Nicoline. And a happy 15 years definitely makes up for 4 bad ones :) Sounds like one lucky cat ♥
