Design as a noun informally refers to a plan for the construction of an object (as in architectural blueprints, circuit diagrams and sewing patterns) while “to design” (verb) refers to making this plan.

Monday, Monday, Monday. My Mondays so far this year have been spent in the company of the designer Marianne at either her office or at Verket.
The finishing touches have been added to the report we have been designing for Vestfold county, the pictures are all in, text have been (sometimes brutally) cut, headings fixed, the colors are just right and the pressing deadlines are out of our hair.

So now I'm taking it easy, our next project will be a bit more open and without the just-a-couple-of-weeks time restrictions.
